WINE
Lipsi has a long tradition in wine-making, in particular a sweet red wine using sun-dried grapes from the local variety “Fokiano”. During the Italian occupation of the island, the Lipsi wine was sent to the Vatican for use during Holy Communion. Try all the wines of Lipsi: red, white, rosé, sweet, semi-sweet and dry all made in limited quantities and of excellent quality.
CHEESE
Try the local cheeses, soft “touloumotyri” and “myzithra”, cheese in oil or brine, and learn about the traditional art of making soft cheeses and how once they were strained in hand-made baskets, called “foukadia”. Local cheeses are also used to make the traditional Lipsi cheese-pie and myzithra-pie, with their very distinct flavours.
HONEY AND FIGS
Try the pure local thyme honey, either on its own or on “diples” or “xerotigana” pastries. The island has abundant fig trees, which in August are full of fruit - you should definitely try some.
SWEETS
Make sure to try honeyed “xerotigana” pastries, “pugaki” baked or fried, “moustalevria” (wine must jelly) and “petimezi” (wine molasses), dried figs and hand-made spoon desserts (quince, tomato, grape).
BREAD FROM THE WOOD OVEN
Bread for the entire island is produced in the traditional wood ovens from which drift irresistible aromas when baking takes place. And as for the products, there are many, baked with care and respect for tradition: “pougakia”, pastries and 14 types of “paximathia” (double baked rolls).
FLAVOURS FROM THE LOCAL- TAVERVAS
Those who love fish and seafood will find delicacies fresh from the sea, just unloaded from the locals' fishing boats. You can enjoy them at the tavernas in the port.
Order ouzo “with meze” and enjoy lots of little snacks to accompany your drink.
Try the shrimp and mussel pilaf, octopus or cod croquettes , turbot and potato salad. Seafood risotto and pasta, stuffed goat, “kleftiko”, veal with cheese in filo, stuffed vine leaves, small fava pies, crunchy ‘double potatoes’, “crazy feta’’ risotto with squid ink...
Many dishes - home-style, traditional but also gourmet await to be tasted.
